Vidyut Jammwal is set to make his Hollywood debut with Street Fighter, and director Kitao Sakurai believes the actor brings the authenticity needed to portray the iconic video game character Dhalsim. Ahead of the film's release, Sakurai has praised Jammwal's connection to the role, saying his portrayal brings a sense of realism to the character.
Produced by Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, the live-action adaptation is based on the popular video game franchise by CAPCOM. The film brings together an ensemble cast to portray the franchise's World Warriors, with Dhalsim among its recognisable fighters. It is scheduled to release in Indian cinemas on Friday, October 16, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Speaking about the decision to include Dhalsim in the film, Sakurai recalled that there was some uncertainty during the initial discussions. However, he felt the character was essential to the Street Fighter universe and wanted to ensure he was represented in a way that audiences would appreciate.
Vidyut Jammwal's involvement brought a fresh perspective to the role, with the actor expressing an interest in sharing Dhalsim's origins with audiences around the world. Praising the actor's portrayal, Sakurai said, "He's more Dhalsim than Dhalsim, and he owns it, and he's so proud of it. He's bringing so much realness and authenticity to it."
The director's remarks highlight the importance of casting someone who could bring both physical credibility and a deeper understanding of the character to the screen.
Sakurai also acknowledged the challenges involved in adapting a character whose original portrayal could be viewed through the lens of stereotypes. Rather than excluding Dhalsim from the film, the director wanted to approach the character with greater understanding and find the right actor to bring him to life. "The character might have started as a sort of stereotype," Sakurai said, explaining the thinking behind the creative approach.
For Jammwal, the role brings together his martial arts expertise and an opportunity to introduce himself to a global audience through a major Hollywood production. His casting also places an Indian action star in a prominent role within an internationally recognised gaming franchise.
With Sakurai emphasising authenticity and Jammwal bringing his action experience to the character, Street Fighter is set to introduce a new cinematic take on Dhalsim when it arrives in Indian theatres on October 16.
