Piracy continues to be a major challenge for both the Indian film industry and Hollywood. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has become the latest film to fall victim to online piracy. Despite being released only a week ago, the movie was reportedly leaked and widely circulated across multiple social media platforms. Universal Pictures has responded to the leak and vowed legal action.
Most recently, a lower-quality version was posted on X on Sunday morning but was pulled down roughly two hours later, only after garnering nearly 50,000 views, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Addressing the leak, Universal Studios issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, "We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
Despite the piracy, The Odyssey is continuing to dominate the box office, sailing past 600 million USD globally in its second weekend. In India, the film has earned Rs 142.86 crore gross and Rs 119.65 crore net.
The film, based on Homer's ancient Greek poem, follows King Odysseus (Matt Damon) on his dangerous voyage back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, he battles mythical creatures as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).
The film also stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Travis Scott, and Benny Safdie. It was shot using cutting-edge IMAX technology across multiple international locations.
Hollywood actor Matt Damon, who has been receiving widespread praise for his performance in The Odyssey, revealed that he had a female stunt double on the sets of the film.
The actor appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and revealed, "When we did the forced perspective stuff of the Laestrygonians, there were these stunt men who were all seven feet. My double was a woman, a female stunt performer, who had the greatest arms I've ever seen."
Matt previously described playing Odysseus in The Odyssey as the most rewarding experience of his acting career.
