Anupama Parameswaran has opened up about experiencing what she described as "narcissistic abuse" in a past relationship, revealing that she spent nearly two years in what she later recognised as a toxic dynamic. Her comments have sparked widespread discussion online, with netizens speculating about the identity of the former partner. However, the actor did not name the person.
In a recent interview, Lockdown fame Anupama explained how relationships involving narcissistic behaviour can initially appear intense and affectionate before gradually becoming controlling. She described a pattern that began with love bombing and quickly progressed to increasing involvement in her personal life. According to the actor, her former partner became deeply involved with her family early in the relationship, with conversations about marriage and engagement taking place within a short period.
Anupama also addressed the criticism and labels she faced during that phase. She said people called her a "gold digger", but maintained that she could have gone ahead with the marriage and potentially ended up divorced had she not recognised the warning signs and called off the engagement.
The actor said she eventually realised that what she had mistaken for love was actually desperation and control. One of the major issues, according to her account, was that her partner wanted her to quit acting. She also described the emotional impact of being in such a relationship, saying that instead of feeling secure beside her partner, she was constantly worried.
Anupama further explained that controlling behaviour can become more apparent after a relationship reaches a settled stage, particularly when both families and others around the couple become aware of the commitment. At that point, she said, walking away can feel considerably more difficult.
During the conversation, the actor was asked about examples of such controlling behaviour. She then brought up her decision not to promote Dragon, one of the most successful projects of her career, appearing to connect the decision with the circumstances of her past relationship.
Her remarks quickly led to speculation on social media, with several users linking her comments to her previously rumoured relationship with actor Dhruv Vikram. Some posts even questioned whether her revelations were about him. However, Anupama herself did not identify her former partner, and the speculation remains unverified.
The discussion has also drawn attention because Anupama and Dhruv have worked together in Bison Kaalamaadan. The film, directed by Mari Selvaraj, features the two actors in leading roles.
