Still from Dies Irae
Director Rahul Sadasivan's horror film Dies Irae opened to great reviews when it released in theatres last month. Starring Pranav Mohanlal in the lead, the film is part of the horror universe Sadasivan has built in Malayalam cinema. He previously directed the critically acclaimed Bhoothakaalam (2022) followed by Bramayugam (2024). Both films were well received by critics and audiences, with Bramayugam earning Mammootty a State Award for Best Actor this year. Now, Pranav Mohanlal's horror drama is all set to arrive on OTT.
The gripping horror drama will release on OTT on December 5. Streaming platform JioHotstar announced the date on social media. Sharing a poster of the film, the platform wrote, "The Day of Wrath is here. Diés Iraé will be streaming from December 5 only on JioHotstar." They also shared a promotional video showing Pranav's character asleep before a mysterious hand caresses his head.
Diés Iraé, which translates to "the Day of Wrath" in Latin, is written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan and produced by Chakravarthy Ramachandra and S. Sashikanth under Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios.
The film follows Rohan (Pranav Mohanlal), a wealthy Indian-American architect temporarily staying alone in a villa in Kerala. He plans to return to America, where his family is based. After learning about the suicide of a former classmate, Rohan visits her house with a friend, entering her room and reminiscing about their past. He takes a hair clip from her room as a keepsake, which triggers disturbing supernatural events in his home, robbing him of sleep. This pushes him to uncover the mystery behind the haunting.
The film also connects to the universe of Bhoothakaalam and Bramayugam, though it can still be enjoyed as a standalone movie. Despite receiving an A certificate for its gory content, Diés Iraé collected Rs 82 crore worldwide and is among the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year.
It may be recalled that 'Dies Irae' went on floors only in the last week of March this year. Shooting for the film took place at Vadakara in Calicut. What is interesting was that sources had claimed that the makers had plans to complete shooting the entire film in a matter of just 40 days. However, the unit completed the entire film by April, even before this deadline.
Shehnad Jalal, whose work in Brammayugam came in for much critical acclaim, is the cameraman of this new film. Similarly, art direction for the new film is by the art director of Bramayugam, Jothish Shankar. Editing is by Shafique Mohammed Ali. Ali had also worked as the editor of Bramayugam.
