Nag Ashwin has offered a key update on the much-awaited sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, confirming that the upcoming film will not bring in any major new faces. The director's statement also raises questions about how the sequel will move forward without Deepika Padukone, whose character played a crucial role in the first instalment.
Speaking to Variety India, Ashwin was asked whether audiences could expect any fresh additions to the cast. The filmmaker made it clear that the sequel will continue building on the characters already introduced. "No new additions. We are continuing with the story we started, and there are already so many characters in it," he said.
Deepika was central to the story of Kalki 2898 AD, with her character being closely tied to the film's larger mythology. However, Vyjayanthi Movies later announced that the actor would not return for the sequel.
In a statement shared on X, the production house said it had decided to "part ways" with Deepika after being unable to find a suitable partnership, adding that a film of this scale required "that commitment and much more."
Deepika has not directly spoken about leaving Kalki 2. However, she later discussed how her approach to choosing films has changed. "Anything that doesn't feel true to me doesn't cut it," she said, adding that money alone is no longer enough to convince her to take on a project.
While the casting remains largely unchanged, production on Kalki 2 is moving ahead. Ashwin revealed that Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan had already filmed individual portions earlier this year, including scenes they shot together in February.
The director explained that regular production had been delayed by Prabhas' existing commitments, but the scheduling issue has now been resolved. "We're starting regular shooting in mid-October, as we now have call sheets in place for all the artists," Ashwin said.
The filmmaker hopes to complete the shoot by the middle of next year before beginning post-production. On the film's release timeline, he indicated that 2028 is now the likely window.
Released in 2024, Kalki 2898 AD starred Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. Directed by Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, the sci-fi epic crossed Rs 1,100 crore worldwide and won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
