Dorothy: Karthik Subbaraj’s film reportedly faces release setback in Malaysia over LGBTQ content

Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy, starring Keerthy Suresh, has hit Indian theatres but is reportedly facing a setback in Malaysia. The film, which premiered internationally earlier this month, has been generating attention over its content. As it began its theatrical run in India on September 25, reports emerged that its release in Malaysia may have been halted.

Dorothy halted in Malaysia

According to a report by The Hindu Tamil, Dorothy has reportedly been denied a theatrical release in Malaysia. The report cited LGBTQ-related content and same-sex attraction depicted in the film's narrative among the reasons for the reported setback. However, these details are based on media reports, and an official Malaysian censorship order has not been cited in the available information. Therefore, the exact reason for the reported denial remains unconfirmed.

Set in rural Tamil Nadu in the early 1990s, Dorothy follows childhood friends Karthi and Subbu, played by Rishikanth and Sananth. Their lives change after Dorothy, portrayed by Keerthy, enters their world. The film explores themes including friendship, love, caste divisions, violence, masculinity and societal expectations. As the characters grapple with complicated emotions and beliefs, their bond begins to change, setting the stage for the film's central conflict.

All about the film earning appreciation at TIFF 2026

Before its Indian theatrical release, Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy had its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 12. The film was screened in the festival's Centrepiece section and reportedly received a standing ovation. Subbaraj attended the premiere alongside Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, Rishikanth and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. Dorothy was also reportedly the first Tamil feature to premiere at TIFF in a decade.

Keerthy recently opened up about how Subbaraj approached her for the project. Recalling their first conversation, she said, "Karthik Subbaraj sir first sent me the synopsis and asked me, ‘Would you be interested in doing a film like this?' After reading it, I immediately told him, ‘Definitely, I will do it, sir.'"

Dorothy marks Subbaraj's 10th directorial venture. He has also produced the film under Dhammam Films, in collaboration with Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain of Sikhya Entertainment and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios.

The film features music by veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja, marking his first collaboration with Subbaraj. S Thirunavukkarasu is the cinematographer, while Ganesh Siva serves as editor.
