Shagun Sharma is set to take on a challenging new role with her upcoming daily soap Queen. The actress, who has been part of several television projects, will be seen playing a rape survivor in the show. The recently released promo has already grabbed attention for its intense and disturbing visuals, offering a glimpse into the difficult journey her character is set to undertake. After her stint with Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, Shagun is back.
In an exclusive conversation with mid-day, Sharma opened up about filming the promo and the responsibility that came with portraying a strong female protagonist.
Talking about the nerve-wracking experience, the actress admitted that some sequences were physically intimidating. "It was honestly quite nerve-wracking, especially because there were moments that were physically scary as well," she said. One sequence, in particular, pushed her out of her comfort zone. "The jump sequence, for instance, was something I was genuinely terrified of. I was literally standing at the edge at a height, and there was definitely a moment of âWhat am I doing?'" she recalled.
Despite her fear, Sharma knew the scene demanded complete commitment. "But I knew the scene needed that commitment, so I just pushed myself and did it," she said, adding that the experience made her realise what she could accomplish when she stopped overthinking. "I think sometimes as an actor, you surprise yourself with what you're capable of when you stop overthinking and just go for it," she added.
For Sharma, stepping into the shoes of a strong female lead also brings a different kind of responsibility. She believes the role isn't defined by strength alone but by the character's emotional complexity. "When you're playing a strong female lead, you're not just performing a character you're carrying her emotions, her choices, her vulnerabilities and her strength throughout the story," she explained.
What attracted her to the character was the fact that she isn't portrayed as perfect. "She has layers, she makes mistakes, she has fears, but she still chooses to stand her ground," said Sharma, adding that the layered writing gave her plenty to explore as an actor.
While she remains tight-lipped about the storyline, Sharma promised viewers an unfamiliar side of her. "You're definitely going to see a side of me that you haven't seen before," she said.
"Queen has allowed me to explore a character who is strong, but also has a lot going on beneath the surface. There's intensity, vulnerability and a few surprises along the way," she added. Summing up what viewers can expect, Sharma said, "This is Shagun, but not the Shagun you're expecting."
