Sai Tamhankar
Bold, independent and unafraid to speak her mind, the character of Barkha from Matka King instantly struck a chord with Sai Tamhankar. Add filmmaker Nagraj Manjule to the mix, and it became an experience she deeply cherished.
"Looking at our history, if a female artiste is given somebody's wife's role, we make the general assumption that she will be ornamental. When I read [the script], I thought a female, standing up for herself and exercising her voice was very interesting," shares the actor. "I think this is boldness for me - exercising your independence and putting out your voice. I like such women. It's a big deal in that era. So, I was happy to play the character because she has her own journey."
Tamhankar credits Manjule for creating emotionally honest performances and finding layers for her to explore. "If I was confused doing a scene or [didn't know] what exactly I have to do, he would tell us to do nothing, just look here and say it like how you would in real life," she shares. "An actor is tempted to highlight a good line when she gets it, but Nagraj sir says that it is already powerful, you just deliver it with utmost ease and that will work."
With Matka King returning for a second season, the actor says she is excited to revisit the world of the 1960s and 70s. "We have discussed on a very primary level. But I am sure, now that they have announced, there must be some preparation. But we don't know where the script is at or what the development is. But I am glad that Season 2 is coming."
Sai Tamhankar will next be seen in âCarnaame: Badla Gear, Palti Kismat', which follows four friends who find themselves drowning in debt. In a desperate bid to escape their financial troubles, they turn to stealing cars.
