With Mirzapur: The Movie, Hindi cinema is attempting something that Hollywood has done several times over - taking a popular series to the big screen. As Gurmmeet Singh's directorial venture opened in theatres on September 4, actor Shweta Tripathi viewed it as an experiment that will have implications beyond the film. "If Mirzapur doesn't take this risk, then we may never know whether the audience is willing to give you time and money on the big screen as well. Whatever happens with Mirzapur will decide [the future] not just for the film, but for the industry and audience. It will open up so many possibilities for creators," said the actor, who has played Golu Gupta since the first season.
Taking Mirzapur's unfiltered world of violence, expletives, and unabashed swagger from streaming to the big screen meant negotiating a different set of rules, especially that of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). But the makers were certain of one thing - the crime drama's flavour shouldn't be diluted. "The bhaukaal shouldn't be less," laughed the actor. "The CBFC is doing its job and we have to respect that. So, according to that, we found another way. In fact, your vocabulary of abuses will become more creative," she chuckled.
Led by Pankaj Tripathi, Divyenndu, Ali Fazal, and Rasika Dugal, the film takes Shweta back to Golu of season one, before violence and loss changed her. Returning to that version after nine years proved challenging. She reflected, "I was nervous about how I'd go back to season one. Here, Golu is falling in love for the first time. On day one, I thought I was doing a horrible job. But then, Golu came back to me."
