The mashup of 4 Non Blondes' âWhat's Up?' and Nicki Minaj's âBeez in the Trap' has taken over the internet. Celebrities from Jennifer Lopez to Sabrina Carpenter have jumped on the trend, and it's only getting bigger. But how did this unexpected 90s-meets-2010s fusion become the soundtrack of the moment and what's the story behind it?
What's the trend?
The viral format is simple but effective. Two people stand back-to-back as the camera circles around them. One passionately belts out the soulful âWhat's Up?' chorus, while the other jumps in as the beat flips to Nicki Minaj's âBeez in the Trap.' The stark contrast - between raw 90s emotion and slick rap energy making it both hilarious and addictive to watch.
How did it start?
The mashup was originally created in August 2025 by TikTok user DJ Auxlord, but it didn't explode until October - right around Halloween - when countless creators and celebrities began putting their spin on it.
About the songs
âWhat's Up?' was released in 1993 by American rock band 4 Non Blondes, led by singer-songwriter Linda Perry. Despite its title, it's often mistaken for âWhat's Going On?' because of its chorus. The band, based in San Francisco, was active between 1989 and 1994.
Nicki Minaj's âBeez in the Trap', featuring 2 Chainz, dropped in 2012 as the third single from her second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The track became one of her signature hits for its catchy beat and confident lyrics.
Even Linda Perry herself joined in on the trend - and in a surprising twist, the White House's official TikTok account shared a video featuring former President Donald Trump and Melania Trump walking, dancing, and attending events with the mashup playing in the background.
The viral resurgence of âWhat's Up?' continues a growing trend of nostalgic songs dominating social media. Earlier this year, Connie Francis's 1962 hit âPretty Little Baby' went viral - proving once again that the internet loves a good throwback with a modern twist.
