Try your hand at penning a ghazal at a writing workshop

Life is often best represented through meters of a well-penned ghazal. This form of poetry that has been practiced for generations has indeed travelled far and wide. From the royal courts to cinema, it has survived and evolved through times.

A new workshop will introduce avid ghazal fans to the history and origin of the lyrical form, and how one can write in meter.

The session will be lead by Irshaad, a poetry circuit that holds regular open mic meetups at different venues in the city.

"Understanding ghazal is a life-long process. While many of us have been introduced to it through movies and songs, we have lost touch with this art form. There are several misunderstandings related to it. What we are doing is just conducting an in-depth introduction to ghazal, in order to bridge the gap," explained Devroop Sharma, a poet and an Urdu theatre practitioner, who will be co-conducting the event with Abhishek Choudhary, a poet and college professor.

Sharma and Choudhary's love for the Urdu and shayari made them start 'Irshaad', where they have tried to create an informal and intimate setting for young writers. "The writing workshop initially came as a request by other fellow poets and now, it is in demand by mostly young writers. We have successfully completed one chapter of this workshop in May and there are quite a few planned in the coming months," said Choudhary.

While the event is open to all, basic knowledge of Devnagri script is mandatory for those attending.
