I am an 18-year-old living in Estonia and he is a 22-year-old man who lives in Houston, Texas. We have been communicating online for a year and he has always been the one to show a lot of initiative. His thinking is very out of the box and he has always been intriguing but, over the past month or so, I have noticed that his texts get me more excited than they used to. I realised he truly has a nice personality and is an interesting person, so I started investing in the relationship a little more than I used to. I am bold and outgoing by nature, but I haven't revealed much this time; just shown some appreciation, respect and support in a really obvious way, so he knows that I like him. We haven't talked about the basics at all; we don't talk about school, work, family or friends. The difference in time zones makes it impossible for us to talk every day. He has mentioned that he wants to visit my country soon, but I'm not sure about that, because we haven't discussed it much. Should I bring up this 'basics' topic? I don't want to define things between us, just want it to be fun and go-with-the-flow. How can we (or I) make the move to take things to the next level? - Marie T
When you mention 'basics', I suppose you mean the fact that you live in different countries and have never met. The problem with relationships (of any sort) that are forged online, is that they involve a certain artificiality, simply because we all adopt personas online. You're 18, so I assume you haven't had too many relationships to help you figure out what kind of person you are drawn to. If you really want to take anything to the next level, it is unavoidable without you meeting this man in person and spending a little time with him. Long-distance relationships are difficult, and living in different countries is not easy. So think about that too.
