I was married a year and a half ago to a girl I dated for a little over six months. We had a pleasant married life for almost a year, until she suddenly began behaving in an erratic manner. She would abuse me for no reason and fight with my parents for the smallest things. I didn't say anything because I assumed these were teething problems and she just needed time to settle in, considering it was a new environment. I found out a week ago that she has been taking mood stablizers for years in order to stay calm, and has serious issues that require therapy. She never mentioned this to me while we were dating or after we were married, and I feel as if I have married someone who is a complete stranger. What should I do? My in-laws didn't deny anything when I confronted them about this, but said I have to deal with it because I am her husband. She refuses to see a therapist. How will this marriage work?

This really does require professional intervention. I suppose your wife has trust issues that may have prevented her from confiding in you, or it may simply be her ailment that compels her to keep things to herself.

Either way, it's impossible for a columnist to comment on someone's physical or mental state because that is a job for a qualified counsellor. Your wife needs to know that she is loved and that you support her, which is what matters most. I have no doubt that this is something you can both overcome together at some point. Do keep in mind that she is a patient, and can't be held responsible for withholding information, because her reasons may be genuine. You need to empathise with her and try to get her to accompany you to a meeting with a professional. If she wants the marriage to work, I'm sure she will do this, even if it takes time.
