Setting your alarm an hour ahead of your usual wake-up time, battling with your inner sloth, and making discipline your mantra are not the only behavioural adjustments required to get a fab bod.

Turns out, you have to "look good" even before you get to look your best.

Kim Kardashian, the 29 year-old celebutante, recently proclaimed that exercisers "want to look good" when they go the gym.

Never mind that she was speaking at the launch of a fitness apparel brand, K-dash might be wiser than her choice in celebrity BFFs.

Say no to embarrassing sweat patches, ugly crotch fits and fabrics that aren't your friends with tips from the experts.

Post the launch of her fitness DVD, Bipasha Basu is set to launch her fitness clothing line called BB Love Yourself. Fashionable workout clothes that make you look sexy is said to be the USP of BBLY.

"The fit is important when buying exercise gear," says fitness expert Deanne Panday, who also retails for Brazilian fitness brand, Bia Brazil.

"Wearing gear that enhances your body can be motivating in itself as it makes a woman's bottom look better and her thighs look slimmer," adds Deanne.

Deanne suggests wearing breathable gear that feels like it holds your body together. "It's interesting that women are wearing fitness gear not just to the gym, but to teas, coffees and lunches as well."

The fitness expert stresses on wearing material that doesn't aggravate skin. "It's not advisable to wear 100% lycra, especially given the weather and humidity levels in the country. Opt for a cotton-spandex mix instead."

Inner Wear

Finding the right sports bra is crucial. "The breast is composed mainly of tissue and without adequate support over time, you could ruin your physique," says Deanne.

Try on a good quality sports bra. Make sure you can breathe comfortably while in it. Firm does not mean tight, and sports bras that leave marks on your body should be avoided.

Shoes and Socks

"Buy shoes from a reputed brand since sports companies invest a lot of time, money and research on building the right shoe.

Stick with their recommendations, as jogging shoes should be reserved for jogging and cross-trainers for cross training," suggests Deanne and advises women to wear slightly thick socks to avoid shoe bites and for foot support.

"Something as simple as tying your shoes securely can provide support for the foot, which is something that people often overlook," says Deanne.

At the launch for Bravada International's new line of sexy workout gear, earlier this month, brand ambassador Kim Kardashian talked about how important it is for her to "wanna look good" when she works out.

T-shirts and Butt wraps

Wear T-shirts that you feel comfortable working out and training in. Deanne says she used to be conscious about bending down during her workouts and so, would tie a jacket around her waist.

"On one of my trips abroad, I discovered what they call bum wraps; it's like a shirt that you tie around your waist to avoid any potentially embarrassing moments."

Cotton singlets in basic colours

"It's important to wear material that allows the skin to breathe. Slightly loose, perforated, cotton singlets or over-sized V-neck T-shirts work well," suggests holistic health guru Mickey Mehta.

"Round-neck T-shirts are not as comfortable while working out and can constrict your breathing," he adds.

Knee-Length shorts or track pants

Knee-length or three-quarter shorts or even track pants are wardrobe essentials for men.

Shoes and Socks

"The right shoes can make a huge difference to your workout regime. Invest in shoes that are well designed, well engineered, and specific to your fitness regimen.

Runners' shoes will be different from shoes for weight-training," says Mickey.

Also keep in mind that the soles are flexible and not stiff, and made with good quality rubber so that the soles don't heat up too easily.

Investing in quality fitness apparel and gear can save you from long-term exercise-related injuries and enhance performance.

Mickey suggests wearing cotton socks or ones that are 70% to 80% cotton.

Colours

Mickey says that one should stick to white since it makes you "feel bright". Greys, blues, even bright yellows and oranges work, provided you can carry them off.
