Calling for new strategy to deal with cardiovascular diseases, a paper presented at a seminar here has stated that over the next 10 years, India would lose 237 billion US dollars due to heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

As per experts attending the three-day Indo-US workshop on 'vascular and mycardial biology' organised by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology here, said that cardiovascular diseases strikes Indians early and kills many in their productive mid-life years.

The ageing population, increasing levels of obesity, lack of physical activity and the increasing number of people living with diabetes, all contributes to the significant impact cardiovascular disease has on the community, experts said.

Speaking on the occasion, Centre Director M Radhakrishna Pillai said the meeting was an endeavour to identify those advances in concepts on diseae mechanisms which can be investigated through epidemiological and clinical studies for defining noval strategies for prevention, early diagnosis.

Stephen M Prescott, President, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, in his key-note address said the interation among Indian and American cardiologists, scientists and researches from academic institutions as well as Indian industry could result in sustained linkages.

Maharaja of erstwhile Travancore Royal Family Uthradom Thirunal Mathanda Varam inaugrated the event.
