Dr. Chandni Sehgal is a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician and is working in her medical college

Dr. Chandni Sehgal

It is a private medical college and she is working as an assistant professor in the Gynae department. We had scheduled an interview with her and had some questions to put forward for her. Here is how it went.

Q1. Please tell us about your medical journey.

My dad wanted me to become a doctor so I took up MBBS and then did my post-graduation in Obgy. I am a Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician and a Laparoscopic Surgeon also working as an Assistant Professor at MGM Medical College, Kishanganj. The uniqueness of my branch is that it not only deals with pathology but also altered physiology. There is something so inspiring about the moment when "life" opens its beautiful eyes that makes me love my branch more.

Q2. Can you please elaborate about your medical college?

I got married in 2018 and we have a medical college, called MGM Medical College in Kishanganj. It is a private institution with a 700 bedded hospital with an average of 3000-3500 patients daily. There is a lot of misconception behind being from the state of Bihar but it is not always how the perception is. MGM Medical College is one of the few private medical colleges in India with such a large number of patients and clinical material. We have 100 seats in MBBS and the maximum number of post graduation seats in any private medical college in east india with over 100 seats.

Q3. What do you feel about being a female surgeon?

It feels great to be a surgeon. A doctor is a doctor. A male surgeon is never different from a female one, both study the same books, work equally hard, both have the same things to deal with too. Times have gone by when women were looked upon as the weaker ones and not capable enough to do harder things. In my opinion, women are multi-taskers. There is nothing a woman cannot do, if you are confident and know the subject well there is nothing that can stop you.

Q4. Do you have a say on violence against doctors?

It is a shame. The problem is in India on one hand people claim doctors to be equivalent to God and on the other hand when they lose their loved ones that God becomes a killer in their eyes and they think the right way is to physically abuse the doctor who they once thought to be a God! No doctor willingly does something that can harm his/her patient. In India, there is a stark contrast in reality wherein 75 percent of the doctors encounter certain types of abuse. It is time that stringent laws should be made against those who promote violence against doctors.

Q5. How did the idea of starting an Instagram page (@busy_birthing) come to your mind?

In 2020 I started a page on Instagram under the name ‘Busy Birthing' when I noticed a spike of misinformation about women's health on the internet. I became active on the page this year in April after the second wave of Covid-19 hit our country. I do Sunday Q&A sessions, teach students and the general public about gynae problems on the page, post about everything I can to make access to health easier.

Dr. Chandni Sehgal has her clear views and boldly presents them before the media. There are only some women who dare to do this and she is one of them. She is one of the most respectful people in her industry and urges other young individuals to pursue this field as well.
