The study found alarming cases of domestic or sexual violence inflicted upon women by their husbands, who were unwilling to use a condom during sex. Out of the 500 women, who were questioned as part of the survey, 46 per cent said their husbands controlled whether a condom would be used or not, when it came to sexual contact.

23 percent of women revealed to have been the victims of phyiscal violence on refusing sex without condoms or requesting the use of one. 33 per cent were verbally abused.

Researchers say that Intimate partner Violence (IPV) can have adverse effects on a woman's reproductive health, causing problems like foetal loss, higher incidence of infertility among other issues.

Despite the existing, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the researchers discovered that Indian women are still subjected to acts of cruelty like domestic abuse, sexual violence, dowry killings among other things.
