My in-laws are very old-fashioned

28 June,2012 06:28 AM IST |   |  Dear Diana

Dear Diana, I had an arranged marriage six months ago. My in-laws live a very simple life and my husband seems to think that their way of life is correct and that I have to adhere to their lifestyle

There are set rules for everything from morning to night. I'm fed up and have spoken to my parents but they refuse to interfere. I can't see myself leading a life of a docile bahu in ghoonghat. What do I do?

Dear Runa,
Your parents may have found the guy a suitable match for you. But were they aware of what his family had in mind? They were looking for a traditional bahu. There is no point in antagonising them and making matters worse. You need to explain to your hubby. If he is in no mood to listen, then explain your predicament to your folks. They have to give you a patient hearing. If it is causing you too much stress, for some days just don't pay any attention to what they say. Ignore them and lead your life. Hopefully they will realise that people of diverse interests can co-exist. As long as you don't be a source of embarrassment for them, you don't have to worry. Hopefully over time they will see sense. If they do not then weigh your options whether you want to move out of the situation.u00a0
