I smiled the entire time," and "I'm sitting here crying after the credits rolled." These contrasting early reviews from the Hollywood premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on Monday should tell you all you need to know about the hype surrounding the latest installment that picks up from Spider-Man: No Way Home, nearly five years later. With a new world, brand new characters, and a distinctly more emotional plotline, Mumbaikars are counting down to July 30 to catch the film. We gauge what city-based fans' Spidey senses are telling them.

Behind the mask

As a Spider-Man fan, I liked that the trailer appears to take Peter Parker back to his roots, showing him as a more independent, street-level hero protecting New York City. After the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, I'm curious to see how Peter navigates a world where no one remembers him, and how that loneliness shapes his journey.

The action and visuals look exciting, but I hope the film also gives enough space to Peter's personal struggles and emotional growth. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing how his new challenges unfold and what the film's ‘Brand New Day' means for Spider-Man's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

He's One of us

I am super excited to see Spider-Man hopefully become Man-Spider and see Sadie Sink play a certain character that I know I am going to lose my mind over, if it is who I think it is.

He is genuinely one of my favourite characters because he's a kid. He's a teen. He's not rich. He has to juggle everyday responsibilities while adulting. Plus he's known for his quips; something he did way before Marvel made all their characters do it in their movies.

Memories of a hero

What's taking a toll on me as a fan is the ache of Peter Parker having to prove himself to Mary Jane all over again, like starting from zero with someone who used to know him inside out - that hits different. Sadie Sink's role is still doing my head in, though. Love interest or antagonist? It's a 50-50 for me.

There's this fan theory floating around that Zendaya's playing the villain this time, based on that old poster trick where the villain shows up in Spidey's eyes - sounds mad, but if it's true, I'm not okay. IMAX screens at theatres across the city are sold out this week thanks to Christopher Nolan's blockbuster The Odyssey, so it's Thursday tickets, my Spidey tee ready, and finally watching my superhero back on the big screen after five years.

Meeting Tom

In 2017, Sahil Shah met Tom Holland during the promotions of Spider-Man: Homecoming. In an unexpected move, Shah played the then-viral Hindi spoof of the Spider-Man song, titled Ispiderman Holland seemed to love it, and even learnt the lyrics: "Ispiderman, Ispiderman, tune churaya mere dil ka chain"

"I was super excited to meet him. I knew that if I had the chance to talk to him, I had to introduce him to the song. I believe the Spider Verse really missed out on including Ispiderman," Shah quips, adding "He was super nice, accommodating, and I love the fact that Tom's dad is a comedian. There was a lot to bond about."
