Hip-Hop Day 2026: Mumbai's hip hop map, and why you should explore it

It's August 11, 1973, and an apartment in the Bronx, NYC is abuzz with hip-hop beats. Inside, Jamaican born turntablist DJ Kool Herc is spinning the decks for a community gathering. In a moment of experimentation, Herc extends an instrumental beat to keep the party going.

The wordsmiths in the crowd start rapping over it, and a group of dancers get their groove on. While hip-hop's roots are spread far and wide, and there is room for debate on when the genre was really ‘born', this party is widely accepted as the day the genre came into being. To commemorate the day, we charted out hotspots in the city where hip-hop never sleeps.

This Bhandup-based teenage rapper has got the world's eyes on him. After a video of his performance of Vastraa at a rap cypher in Navi Mumbai went viral last month, it reached the 2019 Best Rap Album Grammy-winning American rapper Cardi-B, who reposted the video, catapulting it to mainstream fame. Hip-hop royalty Nas was next, with the India arm of his record label Mass Appeal partnering on Vastraa's official release last weekend.

Gamak Sinha

Rising up the ranks in Vile Parle's cyphers, this Mumbai-Pune-based rapper broke the internet earlier this year for her fiery rhymes and clean delivery. After collaborations with the likes of Indian English rap pioneer Brodha V, Sinha released her first EP Lost & Found earlier this year. Sinha is a trained Indian classical musician, and doesn't shy away from leaving traces of Hindustani in her rap.As she puts it, she has only just begun.

Code 43

Born in Govandi's Natwar Parekh Compound, this group of four young rappers was formed as part of the Govandi Arts Festival's mentorship programme. Members Qasim Shaikh, Zaheer Choudhary, Shahid Sayyed, and Mateen Ansari were one of the firsts to release songs in solidarity with the July 2026 student protests across India. Watch out for a big release soon.
