Gliding over the shimmering waters of Pawna Lake, with the rugged Sahyadris stretching endlessly beyond, paragliding here is as much about landscape as it is about liberation. While the activity may seem like a recent addition to the region's growing adventure scene, Temple Pilots, the operators, have been paragliding in the area for over two decades, with Kamshet being the base for one of India's first and most reliable paragliding hubs.

What makes Pawna stand apart is its unique setting. Surrounded by historic forts such as Tikona and Tung, and within sight of Lohagad and Visapur, the experience blends natural beauty with culture. The cool breeze off the lake offers respite from the summer heat, creating ideal flying conditions. As the sun begins to dip, a golden hue spreads across the water, turning the flight into a visual spectacle.

For first-time flyers, the experience is designed to be smooth and reassuring. There is no dramatic jump; just a gentle lift into the air under the guidance of certified pilots. Each flight begins with a detailed briefing, and safety remains paramount, with operations strictly dependent on weather conditions. "Paragliding is the closest to flying like a bird - there's no machine, no fuel, just you and the sky," says Anita Deshpande, co-founder, Temple Pilots.

Flights typically operate between late April and mid May when wind conditions are most favourable. Timings vary with daylight, often extending into the evening for those seeking sunset views. Open to anyone above six years of age, the activity accommodates a wide range of participants, including specially-abled flyers through partnered initiatives. The experience is as accessible as it is unforgettable.

For younger participants and enthusiasts, introductory programmes provide a glimpse into aerodynamics and hands-on control under expert supervision, turning a fleeting adventure into a learning experience. "We don't treat this like a ride - it's a partnership with nature. The wind decides everything, and our job is to work with it safely," adds Deshpande, underscoring the philosophy behind every take-off.
