With summer here, mango - the king of fruits, bursts onto the scene and goes viral in unimaginable ways. Last year, a fake mango went viral too, for the right reasons, to the point that it went out of stock. We are referring to Aamchi, by Hocco, a modern standalone Indian ice cream platform created by the Chona family.
The single serve box is designed to look like the vermillion-orange coloured aam peti we get from the fruit vendors. In it was a single mango lookalike. We crack it open with a spoon, and break the white chocolate mould that has been shaped and spray painted to resemble the fruit. Inside, the spoon dips into the creamiest full-fat ice cream. Made from Alphonso, the indulgence is a treat to the five senses, turning us into kids again.
This year, while ensuring they have enough stock to order, two new flavours have been introduced. The Leemo, a lemon ice cream, gives us a zingy jolt with a sweet landing. Designed to look like a lemon, owner Ankit Chona says, "When we were developing Aamchi, I was inspired by a product I had tasted in China. We didn't expect it to go viral. We worked on the flavours and put it out as a test. This year, Leemo was made to celebrate the one ingredient that we use so much in our nimbu pani during summer."
There's more to savour. As a proud Mumbaikar who loves her Irani café visits for bun maska and chai, we took a special interest in the Bun Maska Bix, inspired by the sweet pav slathered with butter and jam. The rectangular shaped serve, invokes a strong nostalgia for buttery jam toast. The butter ice cream with pockets of jam-filled centre is held between two thin soft cake sponges. The heat wave may be here to stay, but we have found a way to bite the heat.
