The school bus driver and attendant arrested in the rape case of a 11-year-old schoolgirl in Wanowrie were remanded to judicial custody by Special Judge S D Darne yesterday.

Bus attendant Khalid Mohammed Pathan (29) and the driver Kamaruddin Gayasuddin Shaikh (52), both residents of Sayyad Nagar in Hadapsar were charged under sections 376 (rape) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 4 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
The Wanowrie police received the girl's medical report on Wednesday, which confirmed that the minor had been raped.

Extension denied
They had demanded seven more days of custody for the two accused for interrogation. But defence lawyer Munawar Syed opposed the duo's police custody, stating that since the medical report had been already submitted, the custodial interrogation was not required.

On April 21, parents of children studying in the school had protested at the school premises demanding the arrest of the principal and director of the school for neglecting to inform the police and taking action against the driver and attendant.
Fearing arrest, the two have secured ad-interim bail from the sessions court.
