The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police arrested a 22-year-old man within 36 hours of allegedly snatching a woman's handbag while she was travelling in an autorickshaw. Police scanned footage from over 200 CCTV cameras before arresting the accused in Bandra. The complainant, Megha Sharma, 26, a lawyer and Malad resident, registered an FIR under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Iliyas Nazim Khan, alleged accused
According to police, the incident took place at around 1.45 am on August 1 on the CST Road stretch leading from Kurla towards Santacruz near Hans Bhugra Junction in BKC. Sharma was travelling home in an autorickshaw when a biker allegedly reached into the rickshaw, snatched her handbag and fled.
Using technical surveillance and human intelligence, police identified the accused as Iliyas Nazim Khan, 22, a resident of the Rathi Shelter House compound on Lal Mitti Road in Bandra West. "Officers tracked his movements through footage from more than 200 CCTV cameras before arresting him," a police officer said.
Police said Khan's arrest helped solve four cases, including the BKC bag-snatching case and earlier offences registered at the Nirmal Nagar, Kherwadi and Vakola police stations.
