Police have seized mephedrone worth nearly Rs 6.68 lakh, cash amounting to more than Rs 20 lakh and other valuables during searches in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the seizure following a police operation in the Bhagat Singh Nagar area.

Acting on information about suspicious activities, police recently conducted searches in the area, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Gore of Ulhasnagar on Thursday.

Police recover mephedrone, cash and jewellery

During the searches, police recovered 33.41 grams of mephedrone, a synthetic drug, valued at approximately Rs 6.68 lakh.

"Furthermore, officers recovered Rs 20.76 lakh in cash along with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 64,700," DCP Gore said.

The seizure included the suspected narcotic substance, cash and jewellery. Police are investigating the source of the drugs and the circumstances surrounding the possession of the cash and other valuables.

Four accused remanded in police custody

Police have arrested four people in connection with the case. They were identified as Ayaz Sahibzad Syed, Noorjahan Taufiq Sheikh, Shakira Ishtiyaq Ansari and Sharif Salim Sheikh.

"The court has remanded all four accused in police custody until August 21. Our teams are currently pursuing four additional suspects identified during investigation," he said.

Investigators are now looking for the four additional suspects as part of the probe into the alleged drug network.

The police are also examining the role of each of the arrested accused and whether the seized mephedrone was intended for local distribution or was part of a larger supply chain.

Ulhasnagar police step up action against narcotics

The latest seizure adds to a series of narcotics-related recoveries made by Ulhasnagar police over the past year.

According to DCP Gore, the Ulhasnagar police have recovered narcotic substances worth about Rs 5 crore during the last 12 months.

The latest operation is expected to be followed by further investigation into the origin of the mephedrone, the intended recipients and the involvement of the additional suspects identified by police.

The four arrested accused are currently facing investigation in connection with the seizure, while police teams continue efforts to trace the remaining suspects.
