The Kalachowki Police in Mumbai have arrested the prime accused of the notorious Irani gang, known for allegedly targeting senior citizens through impersonation and deceit.

The latest incident occurred on October 5, when a 77-year-old woman was approached by two men posing as "police officers." Claiming that other crooks were eyeing her jewellery, they persuaded her to place her ornaments -- two gold bangles (10 grams each) and a gold necklace (10 grams) -- in a cloth bag for "safekeeping."

The duo then switched the bag and fled, cheating the elderly woman of her valuables.

Following her complaint, a case was registered at Kalachowki Police Station for cheating and impersonation.

To trace the culprits, the Kalachowki police formed multiple teams and scanned over 150 CCTV footage clips from various locations. After a sustained technical investigation, officers identified the main accused as Sajjad Garibshah Irani alias Pathan (46), a repeat offender with 162 cases of cheating, impersonation, and theft registered against him across Maharashtra.

Acting on a tip-off from a secret informant, a police team, with assistance from the local police in Akola, made the arrest. Sajjad, aka Pathan, lived in Irani Vasti, Akola in Maharashtra.
