The Crime Branch of the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police has arrested a 34-year-old man accused of murdering a woman in Goa and fleeing with her valuables, officials said on Wednesday.

According to MBVV Police, the accused, identified as Sagar Ramesh Raul, was arrested on May 20 by the Crime Detection Branch Unit 4 following a parallel investigation launched in coordination with Goa Police.

Murder linked to marriage dispute

Police said the case stems from a dispute over the accused's alleged demand to marry the complainant's younger sister. The victim, identified as 58-year-old Shaila Ghadi, had reportedly opposed the marriage proposal.

MBVV Police said that, enraged over the opposition, the accused allegedly entered the complainant's residence at Chikne Kudne in Sankhalim area of Bicholim in North Goa on May 19 between 11 am and 3 pm. He allegedly murdered the woman and fled with a gold chain and mobile phone belonging to the deceased.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Bicholim Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to murder, robbery and criminal trespass, MBVV Police said.

Technical analysis led to arrest

Officials said the Crime Detection Branch Unit 4 began a parallel probe after receiving information from Goa Police regarding the accused. The team carried out technical analysis and local intelligence gathering to trace his movements.

The accused, a resident of Tiswadi in Old Goa and originally from Sawantwadi in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, was apprehended on May 20, police said.

MBVV Police further stated that officers recovered a gold chain and a mobile phone collectively valued at around Rs 1.11 lakh from the accused's possession. The items were allegedly stolen from the victim after the murder.

Accused handed over to Goa Police

After the arrest, the accused was handed over to Goa Police for further investigation and legal proceedings in connection with the Bicholim police station case, officials said.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of MBVV Police Commissioner Niket Kaushik, Additional Commissioner Dattatray Shinde and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doifode, police said.

The Crime Detection Branch Unit 4 team involved in the operation included police officers led by senior officials Madan Ballal and Pramod Badakh, along with personnel from the cyber cell and detection branch, according to MBVV Police.
