A 45-year-old man was allegedly caught using the registration number of another scooter on his own vehicle to avoid traffic penalties during a routine check by the traffic police. The accused is Paresh Gada, a real estate agent and a resident of Borivali West. Gada was riding a TVS Jupiter scooter without wearing a helmet when he was intercepted by traffic constable Sushant Mohite on June 5 in Borivali.
While issuing an e-challan for the helmet offence, constable Mohite received an alert on the system indicating that the scooter's registration number had been flagged. Further verification revealed the number belonged to another scooter owned by a company called The Design House.
Police contacted the registered owner, Prasad Madhukar Sawant, who told them that he had lodged a complaint in April 2025 after repeatedly receiving traffic challans for violations linked to a vehicle displaying his scooter's number.
When questioned, Gada was unable to produce documents matching the displayed registration number and provided inconsistent explanations. He first claimed the scooter belonged to his brother-in-law, but the relative denied it.
A case was registered at the Borivali police station and the scooter was seized for investigation. Since the offences were bailable, Gada was served a notice and released with directions to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
