The Kasturba Marg Police detained a woman accused of chain-snatching within two hours after she allegedly snatched a 70-year-old's gold mangalsutra in Mumbai's Kandivali East area and recovered the jewellery from her possession.
According to a press note issued on October 3, Saturday, the complainant, Bababai Shantaram Kadam, was returning home around 2.30 pm on Tuesday, September 29, when she was allegedly approached by an unidentified woman near a bus stop at Rajmata Jijau Chowk on the southbound carriageway of the Western Express Highway.
The accused, believed to be around 25 years old, allegedly pulled a one-tola gold mangalsutra from the Kandivali East resident's neck and fled. Following her complaint, the Kasturba Marg Police registered a case against the unidentified woman under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Soon after the case was registered, the crime detection team, led by Assistant Police Inspector Rahul Patil, investigating officer Police Sub-Inspector Janardan Shinde and their team, inspected the scene and began the investigation.
As the incident took place alongside a bridge on the Western Express Highway, there were no government or private CCTV cameras available at the spot, police said. Despite the lack of CCTV footage, the team followed the description provided by the complainant and conducted a search in areas including Magathane, Phulpakhru Garden, Devipada and around Sai Dham Temple.
During the investigation, police detained a woman from the Ariyana Building area in Devipada. The entire stolen property was recovered from her possession, according to the police.
The stolen mangalsutra was subsequently returned to Kadam on October 3 in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Region 3, Gajanan Rajmane.
Police said the complainant is a senior citizen who earns her livelihood through domestic work and was frightened following the incident. The investigation team provided her support and acted swiftly to recover her mangalsutra and detain the woman allegedly involved in the theft. Kadam expressed satisfaction with the action and thanked the Mumbai Police, according to the press note.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police Shashikumar Meena, DCP Gajanan Rajmane and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dahisar Division, Jayraj Ranaware.
The team included Senior Police Inspector Balasaheb Bankar, Police Inspector Yogesh Pawar, Assistant Police Inspector Rahul Patil, investigating officer PSI Janardan Shinde and police personnel Mujawar, Savali, Pujari, Fopase, Sakpal and Kuthe.
