A 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death following an altercation inside a moving suburban train late Tuesday night, with the accused later being traced and arrested at Panvel railway station after an extensive manhunt involving CCTV surveillance.
The deceased, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling in a first-class coach of a Nalasopara Fast local train when the incident occurred at around 11 pm as the train approached Borivali station.
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the dispute reportedly began after Lohar closed the coach door amid heavy rainfall. The accused Roshan Suvarna (29), a Mira- Bhayandar resident, was dressed in black and whose identity was initially unknown, allegedly objected, leading to a heated argument between the two passengers. The verbal exchange soon escalated into a physical confrontation.
Police said that the accused allegedly attacked Lohar with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. As the train arrived at Platform 6 of Borivali Railway Station, the accused allegedly fled the scene through the western exit.
Meanwhile, railway staff and the GRP attended to the situation, while the victim was rushed to the emergency medical room. He was then further referred to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where he was declared dead on arrival around 12:00 am on Tuesday.
The deceased's body was sent for a postmortem examination to Bhagwati Postmortem around 11:12 am on Wednesday, where the body is kept as the family of the deceased awaits the arrival of the victim's grandfather and plans to conduct the last rites on Friday.
Borivali GRP launched a large-scale investigation and reviewed footage from more than 400 CCTV cameras to track the suspect's movements. The accused was eventually traced and arrested at Panvel railway station on Wednesday
Speaking about the injuries, the victim's younger brother, Mohit Lohar, said that Mayank was found lying in a pool of blood inside the coach.
"He had very deep wounds. The injuries to his chest and abdomen were severe. We were told that despite efforts by fellow passengers and medical staff, he could not be saved," Mohit said.
According to a Borivali police official, the victim had suffered stab wounds to his abdomen and chest, and he was lying in a pool of blood when the police evacuated him from the train coach.
According to the victim's family and friends, Lohar had been a sales executive for almost a year at a fashion apparel shop in Andheri. He is survived by his parents and three siblings. Mayank was the third kid of his father, Ramesh Lohar, who operates in the travel service industry.
Mayank's younger brother, Mohit Lohar (20), said that when the family was first informed about the incident on the call, they thought it was a cruel prank, but then they received a call from Mayank's number confirming the incident. "His best friend, who lives in Andheri, was the first one to reach Borivali.
Recalling the tragic sequence of events, "It was raining heavily; we left from Virar and reached it a little later. The full realisation came when we were told by the police to visit Kandivali Hospital, where the doctor had declared him dead on arrival. He was a bright young graduate of finance & marketing. He used to take care of his health - he was a vegetarian, a non-drinker, and a non-smoker. How did this happen to him?"
And the worst part was that no one on that coach came to his rescue. We were told some eyewitness accounts by the police: Mayank was near the coach door, and heavy rains had started pouring, following which he closed the doors, but the attacker started arguing as he had some issues. A fight broke out between them; my brother defended himself well, but then the attacker unleashed the knife attack. When the train reached Borivali, the attacker fled while one of the co-passengers performed CPR on Mayank, but it didn't help."
"Mayank usually took a Virar Fast train; it was unusual for him to take a Nalasopara Fast train. His schedule was different that day. He had told our mother that he was going for an interview for a senior marketing position on Tuesday. He had said that he would take a half-day and go for the interview. He was very confident about it since he had a relevant degree and almost a year of sales experience," added Mohit.
