A 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting an on-duty ticket checker at Jogeshwari railway station after being stopped for travelling without a valid ticket, a police official said on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at the suburban railway station when Western Railway ticket checker Ashish Ranjan Gupta, 33, intercepted Ajay Shivkumar Dhiwar, who was allegedly travelling without a ticket, the Andheri railway police said, reported PTI.
According to the police, Gupta stopped Dhiwar during a routine ticket-checking exercise after finding that he did not have a valid ticket for his journey.
The ticket checker then allegedly attempted to take Dhiwar to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) post so that legal action could be initiated against him for travelling without a ticket.
"As Gupta attempted to escort him to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) post to initiate legal action for ticketless travel, Dhiwar began hurling verbal abuses at him and subsequently assaulted him. Bystanders and railway security staff intervened and detained Dhiwar," the official said.
Police said the situation escalated when Dhiwar allegedly abused Gupta and then assaulted him while the ticket checker was carrying out his official duties.
The incident occurred in the presence of other passengers and railway personnel. Bystanders and railway security staff intervened after the alleged assault and detained Dhiwar at the station.
The police were subsequently informed about the incident, following which Dhiwar was taken into custody.
The incident comes amid routine enforcement by railway authorities against passengers travelling without valid tickets. Ticket checkers are authorised to take action against passengers found travelling without tickets or otherwise violating railway rules.
Gupta subsequently approached the Andheri railway police and filed a complaint against Dhiwar over the alleged assault.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Dhiwar under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from carrying out his duty, along with other applicable offences.
The police official said Dhiwar was arrested in connection with the case.
The railway police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged assault on the ticket checker.
The case centres on the events that followed after Gupta intercepted Dhiwar for allegedly travelling without a ticket. Police are expected to record statements from those present at the station and examine other available evidence as part of the investigation.
