The RCF police in Mumbai's Chembur have arrested a man for allegedly poisoning a woman by spiking her cold drink and attempting to make her death appear natural or accidental, police said.
The incident took place on the night of August 25 at around 11.30 pm at Bungalow No. 57-A in Mysore Colony, where the woman, identified as Vishnumaya, died under suspicious circumstances, officials said.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Ashish Magar, attempted to mislead investigators following Vishnumaya's death by presenting the incident as a natural death or an accident.
Police began a detailed investigation after receiving information about the suspicious death. Officers examined evidence from the scene, statements from witnesses and other circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation allegedly revealed that Magar suspected Vishnumaya's character.
Police said Magar allegedly mixed a poisonous substance into a bottle of cold drink and gave or forced the drink on the woman. She subsequently died.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged poisoning and the events leading up to the woman's death.
Following a complaint filed, the RCF police registered a case on August 28 under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Magar was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him to police custody for five days.
Police Inspector Ramdas Patil is leading the investigation.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Manojkumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Dhananjay Kulkarni, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sameer Shaikh and Senior Police Inspector Dattatray Patil, officials said.
Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged murder and are examining further evidence related to the case, they said.
