Mumbai Police have arrested two men for allegedly stealing Rs 10 lakh in cash from a businessman's office in Kandivali, solving the case after an extensive investigation that included analysis of CCTV footage from over 170 locations.
According to police, the complainant, Nikhil Arvind Shah, had withdrawn Rs 90 lakh in cash from HDFC Bank on April 1 and kept the money in a drawer at his office.
A short while later, he discovered that the entire amount had been stolen and approached the Kandivali Police Station. A case was registered under relevant legal provisions (C.R. No. 482/2026).
The investigation was led by Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Satam and his team under the supervision of senior officers. Officials examined CCTV footage from approximately 175 locations and used technical analysis along with confidential inputs to track down the suspects.
The trail eventually led investigators to the neighbouring state of Gujarat, where the accused were located.
After obtaining necessary approvals, a police team travelled to Gujarat and apprehended the suspects. During questioning, the accused admitted that they had followed the businessman after observing him withdraw the cash and later executed the theft.
Both accused were arrested, and the full amount of Rs 10 lakh was recovered from them, police said.
Officials said efforts are ongoing to determine whether more individuals were involved in the crime and to verify if any additional property needs to be recovered.
The operation was carried out by officers of the Kandivali Police Station along with the detection team, under the guidance of senior Mumbai Police officials.
In another case, an alleged fraud of Rs 7.31 crore involving theft of ornaments from gold loan accounts and their replacement with fake jewellery has come to light at a Canara Bank branch in Maharashtra's Jalna district, police said on Sunday.
Two persons have been arrested in this connection and a case has been registered against the nationalised bank's Badnapur branch manager, another officer and a gold appraiser, they said.
The irregularities were detected recently during the routine quarterly revaluation of gold loan packets kept at the bank.
