A Mumbai Police constable was killed after a heavy piling rig collapsed on him at an under-construction flyover site on the Sion-Panvel Highway in Mankhurd area, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday night along the northbound carriageway of the Sion-Panvel Highway, they said.
The deceased cop was identified as Santosh Gopal Chavan, who was returning home on his motorcycle when the accident took place.
He was attached to Nehru Nagar Police Station and was on deputation to the east control room in Chembur at the time.
According to police, a piling rig used for drilling foundation piles suddenly toppled at the construction site and struck the constable, reported the PTI.
Preliminary findings suggest that the machinery may have been placed on unstable ground, which could have led to the collapse.
Chavan sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
The officials have begun legal proceedings in the matter, with Mankhurd police preparing to register a case against the contractor for alleged negligence, as per the PTI.
Officials are also examining the role of contractors and site supervisors, and whether proper safety protocols were followed.
The incident comes amid a series of construction-related accidents in Mumbai. On April 15, a mobile crane toppled during Mumbai Metro construction in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, though no injuries were reported.
A 400-tonne mobile crane had toppled during ongoing Metro Line 2B construction work in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in the early hours, following a mechanical failure while lifting a pre-cast beam near the Asian Heart Hospital junction.
The incident took place when a large concrete beam was being lifted and positioned onto a pillar using a crane at the metro construction site in BKC.
The mishap happened during the overnight work at around 4:30 am. The work was being carried out by J. Kumar Infraprojects Limited.
Earlier in February, one person was killed and three others injured after a girder slab from an under-construction Mumbai Metro line collapsed on vehicles in the Mulund area.
