THE Mumbai Police Crime Branch has raided multiple clinics across the city allegedly being run by bogus doctors and booked 10 accused in connection with practising medicine without the required qualifications or registration.
The investigation has brought seven establishments across five areas under the scanner. The clinics are spread across Bhandup, Jogeshwari, Borivli, Dahisar, and Mankhurd.
During the operation, police seized medicines and medical equipment worth approximately Rs 2.20 lakh. The seized material included medicine bottles, syringes, antibiotic tablets, and other medical supplies. Some clinics were also allegedly found selling expired Ayurvedic and Unani medicines.
According to the Crime Branch, the accused allegedly treated patients for various ailments, including sexually transmitted diseases (STD), using allopathic, Ayurvedic, and Unani medicines despite allegedly lacking the required qualifications or registration to practise medicine.
A senior investigating officer said people posing as doctors often choose random names for their clinics, including religious-sounding ones, to gain the confidence of local residents. One of the examples is Vinayak Health Clinic in Bhandup, where the practitioner is Imran Abdul Khan. "While the difference between a clinic's name and a practitioner's name does not by itself establish wrongdoing, the motive is to gain the trust of locals," said a police officer.
An FIR has been registered at Bhandup police station under Sections 33 and 36 of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961. Crime Branch Unit 7, Ghatkopar, is investigating the case.
