A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly carrying out a series of thefts on express trains, with railway police recovering gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 26.31 lakh from his possession, reported the PTI.

The accused, identified as Raghu Suman Khosla, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was detained at Panvel railway station during routine CCTV surveillance and anti-sabotage checks.

According to railway police, Khosla came under suspicion after he got off an AC coach of the Mangala Lakshadweep Express on July 17 and was seen behaving suspiciously, the news agency reported.

Officers searched his backpack and found a large quantity of gold and silver jewellery. He was taken into custody after failing to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the valuables.

Linked to theft on Netravati Express

Police investigations later linked the recovered jewellery to a theft on the Netravati Express on the same day.

In that case, a passenger travelling to Kerala had her handbag containing jewellery and an iPhone stolen near Karwar railway station. A case had been registered by the Konkan Railway Police in Madgaon, Goa, according to the PTI.

Investigators said Khosla is a habitual offender with 39 criminal cases registered against him across the Mumbai railway network and in other states.

Police alleged that he typically targeted passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches of long-distance express trains by stealing unattended bags.

Further investigation underway

The accused has been booked under Section 305(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with theft in a dwelling house or means of transport.

His custody, along with the recovered valuables, has been handed over to the Konkan Railway Police in Madgaon for further investigation and legal action, as per the PTI.
