The Malwani police have arrested a man from Assam for murdering his partner in Mumbai after suspecting her of being involved in an extramarital relationship. Mohammad Shamsuddin Abdul Matin, 29, was arrested from Assam's Bhojai district in connection with the murder of his partner, Salima Khatun, 33, a native of Kolkata who had been residing in Malwani.

Murder remained undetected for days

Police said that on May 19, an argument broke out between the couple inside their rented residence. During the confrontation, Matin attacked Salima with a knife and slit her throat before fleeing Mumbai.

The murder remained undetected for several days. Police said Salima's sister had been trying to contact her, but her phone remained switched off. Meanwhile, neighbours complained about a foul smell emanating from the house. When Malwani police opened the locked premises, they found Salima's semi-decomposed body.

Case registered

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that the woman had been murdered. Based on a complaint lodged by Salima's sister, Malwani police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Living together for 18 months

According to police, Salima and Matin became acquainted through Instagram and developed a relationship. Salima reportedly invited him to Mumbai, where they had been living together in a rented house at New Collector Compound, Malwani Gate No. 7, for the past one-and-a-half years.

Couple had frequent quarrels

During the investigation, police learned that the relationship had become strained due to frequent arguments. Investigators said Matin suspected Salima was having an affair. Police sources said she was known to interact freely with people and often socialised with friends, which made Matin jealous and insecure.

Accused wanted to leave

According to Matin's statement to the police, he wanted to end the relationship and return to Assam, but Salima allegedly opposed his decision and eventually threatened to file a police complaint. The issue led to repeated quarrels between the two.

Arrest and confession

Using technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, investigators traced Matin to Assam, arrested him, and brought him to Mumbai for questioning. During interrogation, he confessed that his suspicion regarding Salima's relationship with another man was the primary motive behind the crime. Matin, who works as a mason, was produced before a local court and remanded to police custody till June 6.
