Three persons have been arrested for allegedly stealing gold chains and 'mangalsutras' from women passengers of public buses, Thane police said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.
An official said 21.5 grams of stolen gold jewellery valued at R 3,22,500 have been recovered from them.
The probe into the case began on a complaint of Manisha Kiran Kalanke, a resident of Kalwa, who was robbed of her 15 gram gold 'mangalsutra' on September 11 when she was travelling on BEST bus number 494, he said, reported PTI.
Crime Branch Unit I senior inspector Anil Shinde said CCTV footage was analysed, leading to the arrest of Anil Kisan Jadhav, Suresh alias Suri Dayanand and Sagar Sudhir Savardekar on September 17, reported PTI.
They have confessed to involvement in two more cases, he added.
In a separate incident, a robbery case was solved within 24 hours by Thane Crime Branch, which managed to recover stolen property and vehicles worth Rs 36.48 lakh, an official said on Monday, reported PTI.
Two employees of a food unit in Ulhasnagar were robbed of Rs 40 lakh when they were going to a bank in Kalyan West to deposit the amount on September 15, Deputy Commission of Police Amarsingh Jadhav said at a press conference.
"The four robbers came on two motorcycles. They kicked the scooter of the victims and fled with the bag containing cash. Following the incident, Bazarpeth police station began a probe. A parallel investigation was immediately launched by the Crime Branch," he said, reported PTI.
The Crime Branch apprehended Sameer Akhtar Shaikh, Aftab Aslam Khan, Shahnawaz Gaffar Hasan Ansari, Soheb Yunus Shaikh, Muzahid Anwar Khan, and Shahid Isak Shaikh within 24 hours of the crime, and stolen items as well as two motorcycles, cumulatively valued at Rs 36.48 lakh, were recovered, the DCP said.
The six have been remanded in police custody till September 22, and further probe into the case is underway, he added.
