ACB nabs cop with Rs 5,000 bribe

In two separate incidents, the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a police sub-inspector (PSI) attached with the Shahu Nagar police station and a BMC official from E-ward on Thursday for accepting bribe. The accused have been identified as Devanand Ramdas Ahire and Ismail Umar Shaikh respectively.



Pay for FIR
In the first case, the complainant, an estate agent by profession had leased out his house to a Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Matunga years ago. However, when he asked them to move out, the members of the mandal refused and instead, threatened the landlord and started demanding money from him.

Fed up of the daily harassment he was subjected to, the estate agent filed a written complaint with the Shahu Nagar police against the mandal. His complaint was then forwarded to Ahire, in-charge of beat no 3.

Realising that Ahire lacked interest in resolving the issue, the complainant personally met the officer, requesting him to register an FIR against the mandal's members. However, the complainant was in for a rude shock when Ahire demanded Rs 10,000 for registering an FIR. Later, the amount was settled at Rs 5,000.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the estate agent approached ACB. After verifying his complaint, the ACB officials laid a trap and arrested Ahire red-handed while accepting
Rs 5,000.

BMC official nabbed
In another incident, Ismail Umar Shaikh, BMC chief inspector, E-ward, was nabbed red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,10,000. In addition, Rs 4,42,555 in cash were seized from his office.
