This year's first fatal accident took place on the Eastern Express Highway opposite Somaiya Medical College, Chunabhatti. Mitesh Jethva (24), a ship survey course student, died, while his friend Kinjal Patel (19) suffered grievous injuries.
Jethva, who was aspiring to go abroad for studies, was dropping Patel to her friend's house party on December 31 when his motorbike met with an accident.
A Nehru Nagar police officer said, "They were on their way from Ghatkopar when, while overtaking a car, their bike hit a tempo, which had broken down in the middle of the road.
Jethva did not see the tempo, as its indicator lights were off. After the accident, the tempo driver did not inform us nor did he try to help the injured."
Jethva was declared dead on admission at Sion Hospital, while Patel is in the trauma ward. Jethva was engaged to be married soon and is survived by three brothers.
The police have arrested the tempo driver, Sunil Wagh, and released him on a bail of Rs 3,000.
