The 42 lakh commuters travelling on Central Railway (CR) will no longer have to make do with the Western Railway's (WR) hand-me-down Bombardier make of trains.

At a meeting held on Thursday, Central Railway authorities stood up against the step-motherly treatment being meted out to them and demanded that the 11 remaining Bombardier trains be given to them instead. Sources said that the 11 new trains were to be allotted to WR.

"We have received the CR's demand to transfer these 11 rakes to them. We shall be discussing it at length," said an official from the Railway Board, who has came down to Mumbai from Delhi for the meeting.

All these new rakes are expected to come in the next three months. The Bombardier rakes, which were introduced last year, are spacious and have better pick-up speed when compared to the older rakes.

If the decision goes in favour of the CR, it will be the first time that they will receive brand new trains. Currently, the CR is using trains that have already been used by WR for seven to eight years.

When contacted, CR authorities said they will comment once the Railway board takes a final decision.
