A fire broke out at a dumping ground in Kalyan city of Maharashtra's Thane district on Sunday night, officials said, reported PTI.
The blaze, which started at the Aadharwadi dumpyard around 8.30 pm, sent massive flames into the sky that could be seen from a long distance, reported PTI.
No injuries have been reported so far, they said.
Upon receiving the alert, firemen from the local station rushed to the spot.
"Currently, two fire engines from the Aadharwadi fire station are battling the blaze. However, given the intensity of the fire, engines from all fire stations under the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation have been requisitioned," a fire brigade official said, reported PTI.
Apart from flames, a thick blanket of smoke has enveloped the surrounding areas.
The official said there was another fire at the Umbarde dumping site, which has been put out, reported PTI.
"The operation at Aadharwadi is still ongoing. If the water supply remains consistent throughout the night, we expect to bring the situation under control," he added.
In another incident, a fire broke out at five to six scrap godowns in Mumbai's Mankhurd area early on Friday, leaving one person injured, civic officials said.
The fire erupted around 5 am at Kurla Scrap Dealers in Ekta Nagar, Mandala, along the Govandi-Mankhurd Link Road, they said.
A person, identified as Shahrukh Khan (25), sustained 40 to 45 per cent burns and was admitted to the civic-run Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, also known as Sion Hospital. He is said to be in a stable condition, they said.
Four fire engines and other firefighting vehicles were rushed to the spot, and the blaze was doused around 8.40 am, said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
He said the fire affected electric wiring and installations, LPG cylinders, tarpaulin sheets, oil drums, plywood, steel sheets and scrap material stored in the 'galas' (units).
