The incident took place when wielding as part of the periodic over hauling (a major repair work, that takes place after every 18 months). As a result of the wielding work that resulted in the rakes catching fire.

PRO Western region said, "The fire started at 11.30 am due to welding work but got in control by workshop staff with the help of inhouse fire-fighting system. The fire brigade arrived after that and ensured other necessary actions. No casualties are reported and suburban train services were also unaffected as the fire was limited to only one coach,"

On January 24, a 25-year-old youth set fire to one of the ladies compartments of a local train between Churchgate and Marine Lines stations. It took 30 minutes for the officials douse the fire which had also spread to one of the general compartments.
