Mumbai: School bus rams into siblings, kills 6-year-old

Around 3 pm on Thursday afternoon, the Murugan brothers Ashok Sidhappa Murugan (6) and Suresh Sidhappa Murugan (10) were returning from their school in Lakshmi Nagar. After leaving from school, they crossed the Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road to catch a bus from the other side to go home.

Yesterday was like any regular day for the siblings, until the private school bus from R N Gandhi School, Vidyavihar (east), passing from the route rammed into them. The school bus was ferrying children, none of whom have faced any injury.

Post the accident, the boys were admitted to Sapna Hospital in Ghatkopar. Ashok died on the spot after being hit on his back, while Suresh is in the hospital with an injured leg. Dr Amin Shah, a doctor from the hospital, said, "Suresh is out of danger, but he has some injuries and his right leg is fractured."

The family his registered a case with the Pant Nagar Police Station. The driver of the school bus Jallauddin Shaikh (25) has been booked under Sections 279, 304A and 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

One of the family's neighbours present at the police station said, "The father of these boys just died two months ago due to an illness. They are two brothers and one sister living in Kamraj Nagar with their mother, who works as a domestic help."

Principal says
The principal of RN Gandhi School, Vidya Singh, said, "I learnt about the incident in the evening as I was away from school. It is a very unfortunate incident. We had given a contract to a person who has been running the school buses for us for almost 20 years and no untoward incident had happened before this. An appropriate transportation committee has also been formed in our school, which ensures that all regulations are adhered to, especially those regarding background checks of drivers and attendants, how they drive and safety measures on buses."
