Mumbai Traffic Police have launched a city-wide crackdown on private vehicles illegally using beacon lights and sirens, days after a mid-day exposé highlighted the alleged misuse of police-style stickers and flashing lights.
Acting swiftly, officials carried out enforcement drives across the city on April 1 and 2, targeting vehicles fitted with unauthorised red, blue, and yellow beacon lights, often used to mimic VIP movement and bypass traffic.

Joint Commissioner Anil Kumbhare confirmed that the crackdown is ongoing and will be intensified.
The traffic police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report violations by sharing photographs via official social media handles or helplines.
Shock finding
>> Sources said several vehicles belonged to government employees, politicians, and senior officials, none of whom are legally permitted to use such lights.
>> "All unauthorised lights were removed and seized. Fines were imposed and strict warnings issued," a source said, adding that repeat offenders will face stricter legal action.

The operation covered key divisions, including South Central, Marine Drive, and Bandra.

>> The drive also targeted misleading nameplates on private vehicles.
