A 25-year-old man has confessed to the police that he had stolen jewellery worth Rs 28.10 lakh and around Rs 4 lakh from a businessman who had hired him as a servant through an advertisement.

The accused is Ajay Mandal alias Chanchal, originally from Bihar. Mandal was arrested by the Crime Branch's property cell at 7.45 pm on October 10. In April, the businessman Nilesh Gupta (46), a resident of Pedder Road, had published advertisements in Marathi and Hindi newspapers for a servant.

Mandal then approached Gupta, offering his services. Mandal started working for Gupta from April 23. On May 19, Gupta, along with his wife and son, left for Udaipur, leaving his parents and Mandal at home. On the same day at 8 am, Gupta's parents went for a walk at Hanging Garden and returned at 11 am.

When they came back, they did not find Chanchal at home and informed their son. On May 21, Gupta returned home from Udaipur in the evening, along with his wife and son. The next day, when Gupta's wife went to pick up her bracelet from a cupboard, she saw that the lock had been broken.

She immediately called her husband and informed him. While checking the cupboard, Gupta found that two out of three lockers had been broken open, and jewellery and money were missing from the cupboard.

Gupta filed a complaint at Gamdevi police station on May 23 and informed the cops that his servant had left home on May 19 and had stolen R4 lakh in cash and jewellery worth R28.10 lakh. A case of theft was registered against Mandal.
