Deonar landfill still sees fire outbreaks; assured foolproof measures are nowhere in sight



Two fires broke out at the 132-acre Deonar dumping ground in the last week of October. Residents say respiratory ailments have worsened

On June 20, we raised an alarm over the threat posed by that the Deonar dumping ground, the city's largest landfill that has also seen repeat outbreaks of fire, the growing menace of water and power theft, and school dropouts taking to drugs. Residents claim that pollution owing to the burning of garbage at the landfill has only worsened in the last four months and that there has been a sharp spike in respiratory ailments.

In the last week of October, two fires were reported from the 132-acre dumpyard. SP Kilije, assistant ward commissioner, didn't respond to mid-day's calls.
