BKC-WEH link via Mumbai University to open on August 13, easing traffic

Good news for motorists travelling between the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Western Express Highway (WEH), as a crucial arm of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road connecting the two via Mumbai University is set to open to traffic on Thursday (August 13).

The new link is expected to provide a faster alternative for motorists travelling between BKC and the Western Express Highway while easing pressure on existing routes.

Land acquisition delayed project

The project took nearly nine to 10 years to complete. MMRDA sources told Mid-Day that land acquisition was the primary reason for the delay, along with several permissions required for the project.

Sources also said the bridge had been ready for the past two weeks, but its opening was delayed as authorities were awaiting the Chief Minister's availability for the inauguration.

1.4-km elevated connector

The 1.4-km elevated connector, which has been under construction since October 17, 2017, is expected to improve east-west connectivity by providing a seamless link between BKC and the western suburbs, while also improving access to the eastern parts of the city.

The project has been built at a cost of Rs 209.56 crore. Of this, Rs 148 crore was spent on the elevated bridge, while Rs 61.56 crore was allocated for the Vakola bridge and allied works.
