The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed 52 unauthorised stalls from Sabu Siddik Road, Musafirkhana and Manish Market in south Mumbai on Thursday as part of BMC âPedestrian First' campaign. The action marked the second consecutive day of the civic body's encroachment removal drive in the area.
The BMC's Maintenance and Encroachment Removal Department demolished temporary structures made of tarpaulin sheets, bamboo, iron pipes and iron sheets, along with permanent unauthorised iron stalls.
The latest action followed a drive on Wednesday, when the civic body removed 92 unauthorised stalls from Sabu Siddik Road and the Musafirkhana area. With the two drives, the BMC has taken action against a total of 144 unauthorised stalls over two days.
According to the civic body, the action was undertaken following an inspection of Sabu Siddik Road and Musafirkhana on October 13 by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Chanda Jadhav and elected public representatives. Assistant Commissioner of A Ward Ujwal Ingole and officials from the maintenance engineering, licensing and encroachment removal departments were also present during the inspection.
The drive was carried out on the directions of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma Lavangare and under Jadhav's guidance, in line with the BMC âPedestrian First' campaign envisioned by Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide.
Five sub-inspectors and 10 police personnel from the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg Police Station were deployed to provide security during Thursday's operation.
Meanwhile, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide on Wednesday inspected several locations across Mumbai and directed civic officials to clear footpaths of encroachments, improve pedestrian access and strengthen road cleanliness measures.
The inspections were conducted under the BMC âPedestrian First' campaign and its drive to eliminate garbage-vulnerable points. Bhide reviewed footpath conditions, waste collection arrangements and road maintenance in Worli and Santacruz, along with facilities at Dr VN Shirodkar Maternity Hospital.
The inspection covered GL Loader Chowky on Senapati Bapat Marg, Adarsh Nagar Road in Worli, Tilak Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road in Santacruz West, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Vile Parle station road.
