A week after this paper highlighted unlit pockets on Sion railway station's platform No 1, commuters now have reason to breathe easy. Railway authorities have installed lights in the dark spots on the platform.
The issue was reported by mid-day last week after a woman's gold chain was stolen and commuters complained that the ongoing work outside the station had left parts of the platform poorly lit. The darkness was particularly concerning around the area where women's and general first-class compartments halt.
For passengers returning home after long working hours, better illumination means improved visibility while boarding and alighting from trains and a reduced fear of being targeted in poorly lit areas.
"Thank you, mid-day, for highlighting our problem. Earlier, standing on the platform after sunset was uncomfortable because we could barely see who was around us. The lights have made it easier to remain alert and we feel safer," said Shrihsti Bajaj, a daily commuter.
